February’s Tutor Highlight: Vanessa A.
Vanessa A. brings warmth, patience, and deep care to her work as a tutor at Rocketship Los Sueños. Though she has been with BATA for just two months, her impact is already being felt in the confidence and growth of her students. Her journey to BATA began unexpectedly. “I had applied for this job position, and after interviewing, I received an email stating that I was hired and that they were extending the offer for the position that was already filled.” That surprise opportunity quickly became a role she now finds incredibly meaningful.
For Vanessa, tutoring is about more than academics—it’s about helping students believe in themselves. “As a tutor, it has always been very important to me to remind my students of how smart they are,” she shares. She often sees students assume that needing extra support means they are less capable than others, which can make them hesitant about tutoring. But through encouragement and connection, she has watched that mindset shift. Recently, two of her students told her they wished she could be their classroom teacher—something that deeply affirmed the trust she has built.
When she first started, many students were skeptical of having a new tutor. Over time, those relationships have grown. “I am happy to say that I have built a great relationship with the majority of my students… they have recently told me that they were starting to like tutoring.”
Vanessa is passionate about English and French, and she finds the greatest joy in seeing learning stick. “I love seeing my students finally understand a concept and… apply what I have taught them into other scenarios weeks later.”
She believes deeply in the purpose of her work. “Everyone deserves to have the right to an education… some students need a little extra help, and my role as a tutor is to get them that help.” Tutoring has also shaped her personally, making her more patient and fulfilled. The joy she feels working with students, she says, “is simply unexplainable.”
Her message to future tutors is simple: “Being a tutor is not just a profession, it is about having an impact on so many students.”
