Finding BATA, One Google Search at a Time
Kyle S. has been tutoring with the Bay Area Tutoring Association for three months. In that short time, he’s already worked across four programs: Rocketship Fuerza, Yerba Buena High School, Mission Early College High School, and Cabrillo Middle School. Kyle found BATA the same way many people find new opportunities: by searching for tutoring services online.
Helping Students Cross the Finish Line
For Kyle, nothing beats seeing a student succeed against the odds. He says one of the most meaningful parts of his time at BATA has been helping students pass classes they were initially failing. Being part of that process, and watching students reach a goal they set together, has been a genuinely cheerful experience for everyone involved.
More Than Just a Tutor
Kyle’s students don’t just come to him with academic questions. Some have asked him for life advice, too, everything from how to apply to college to where to grab a good meal. That kind of trust doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s a sign of the relationships Kyle has built with the students he supports.
A Passion for Science, A Gift for Pacing
Kyle is passionate about physiology, anatomy, and biology. However, what he enjoys most about tutoring isn’t the subject matter alone. It’s watching a student finally understand a difficult topic. He believes tutoring works because it meets students where they are. Teaching at an individual pace allows for real understanding in a way that a classroom’s collective pace often can’t.
Growing as a Leader
Working with BATA has pushed Kyle to grow in ways he didn’t expect. He points to learning how to lead a team as one of the biggest impacts tutoring has had on him. Along the way, he’s also met people from many different walks of life, an experience he considers one of the most surprising and valuable parts of the job.
Advice for Future BATA Tutors
Kyle’s advice for anyone considering tutoring is a simple reminder: you were a student too.
