From New Hire to Full-Time Tutor

Rachel Garcia first joined the Bay Area Tutoring Association in October 2024. She returned as a full-time tutor in March 2025. Today, she supports students in English Language Arts. Her focus is on literacy, spelling, sentence structure, and phonics.

Watching Students Read With Confidence

At the start of the semester, several of Rachel’s students could not read. Now, they are willing to try with confidence. Rachel has also seen real emotional growth in many of them. For her, that progress is the most meaningful part of tutoring. One more moment stands out, too. Students have told Rachel that they look forward to coming to her sessions.

Learning What Makes Each Student Tick

What Rachel enjoys most is seeing how each student learns. She looks for their strengths and builds from there. As a result, students feel seen and supported. Rachel describes their response to her as positive.

Why Tutoring Matters

Rachel has noticed that tutoring helps students in several ways. They learn new best practices. They also boost their confidence and motivation. In addition, they develop important self-management skills. The learning goes both ways. Rachel says she picks up new things from her students, too.

Laughs Along the Way

The biggest surprise for Rachel has been her students’ humor. Unscripted funny moments pop up often. Consequently, sessions are something both tutor and students enjoy.

Advice for Future BATA Tutors

Rachel’s advice is simple. Be real, be authentic, and meet students at their emotional level as much as possible.
