From the Classroom to One-on-One Tutoring

Maggie Middione has been tutoring with the Bay Area Tutoring Association since December 2025. She works with students at Summerdale and Brooktree. Before joining BATA, Maggie taught second grade in a traditional classroom. After moving back to the Bay Area, she wanted to keep working with students. However, she was ready to try something new. Tutoring gave her that opportunity.

Helping Students Build Confidence Through Reading

Maggie’s tutoring focus is language arts and phonics. Her passion for early literacy shows in the moments she finds most rewarding. For example, one recent highlight was watching a student who typically needs redirection sit down on their own. That student independently sounded out and read CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words without any prompting.

For Maggie, that kind of small breakthrough is the whole point. She encourages her students to take on challenges, even when it means making mistakes along the way. After all, mistakes are proof that a student is trying and learning.

Building Trust, One Session at a Time

Maggie is still early in her BATA tutoring journey. So far, she says the most meaningful part has simply been building relationships with her students. That trust has paid off. She describes the students she works with as consistently respectful and kind.

Why Tutoring Matters to Maggie

Maggie believes every student deserves access to resources tailored to their needs. This is especially true for students who need extra practice to catch up or move ahead. That belief drives her approach to tutoring at BATA.

The impact goes both ways, too. Maggie says witnessing a student’s “lightbulb moment” is one of the most motivating parts of her week. That’s the instant when a concept finally clicks.

Advice for Future BATA Tutors

Maggie’s message for anyone considering tutoring is simple. It’s rewarding work, and it leaves a mark that lasts a lifetime.
