Tutor Highlight: Juliana Alaibilla on Creating Safe Spaces, Building Confidence, and the Joy of Student Growth

After three and a half months of tutoring with BATA at Rocketship Fuerza, Juliana Alaibilla has already experienced one of the most rewarding lessons tutoring has to offer: that when students feel safe, they grow.

Juliana found her way to BATA through Handshake, where she came across the opportunity and saw it as a chance to develop her skills while giving back. What she discovered along the way has only deepened her commitment to working with young learners.

A Shy Student Who Found Their Voice

For Juliana, the most meaningful moment of her time at BATA so far has been watching one student’s transformation unfold week by week.

“At the start, I had one student that was very shy and struggled to speak English,” Juliana shared. “However, as weeks went by, they grew more confident in answering my questions and learning in general.”

Juliana credits that growth to something she and her students built together: a safe, encouraging environment where it was okay to try, to struggle, and to keep going. Seeing that student open up reinforced something important for her — that the conditions for learning matter just as much as the content itself.

Moving forward, Juliana is committed to carrying that lesson into every session. “From that experience, I will continue to implement an encouraging and safe space for my students to grow more confident and motivated.”

Passion for Reading, Art, and Helping Students Grow

Juliana brings a love of reading and art to her tutoring, subjects she’s passionate about and that naturally invite creativity and expression in the classroom. For her, the most enjoyable part of the work is straightforward: seeing students develop their skills and watching their motivation come alive.

“Helping the students grow their learning skills and seeing them motivated,” she says, is what keeps her engaged and inspired.

That enthusiasm seems to be mutual. When asked how students respond to her, Juliana’s answer was simple and telling — with excitement and eagerness.

Why Tutoring Matters

Juliana sees tutoring as something with real stakes for students’ futures. “It’s important to tutor students as it helps them be more motivated to learn as well as acquire knowledge that will help them in the future,” she explained.

And working with BATA has had an impact on her, too. The experience has made her more passionate about supporting kids in their learning journeys — something she didn’t fully anticipate when she first applied.

A Message for Future Tutors

For anyone considering joining BATA, Juliana keeps it simple and direct: “You got this!”

It’s the same spirit of encouragement she brings to her students every week — the belief that with the right support, growth is always possible.
