Summer Learning in Full Bloom: BATA & San José Public Library Inspire Young Readers and Mathematicians
This summer, the Bay Area Tutoring Association (BATA) partnered with the City of San Jose Safe Summer Initiative (SSIG) and San José Public Library to provide engaging academic enrichment opportunities that kept students learning, growing, and having fun throughout the summer months.
BATA has proudly participated in the City of San José Safe Summer Initiative Grant since 2016, helping provide San José youth with safe, enriching, and educational opportunities during the summer. This year, 80 students participated across BATA’s Estrella Summer programs, with 40 students served through the online program and 40 students served across two San José Public Library locations. Together, these programs provided 114 hours of academic programming, bringing literacy, mathematics, mentorship, and community together in welcoming library spaces and online learning environments.
At Biblioteca Latinoamericana and Seven Trees Branch Library, students entering grades 1–4 participated in BATA’s Reading Fluency Program. Each library hosted 18 two-hour sessions, for a total of 72 hours of in-person programming across both locations. Students strengthened foundational literacy skills through guided oral reading, interactive comprehension activities, educational games, and student-selected books that encouraged a lifelong love of reading. By allowing students to choose books based on their interests, the program helped make reading both meaningful and enjoyable while building confidence and fluency.
In addition to the in-person reading program, 40 students participated in BATA’s Online Summer Math Program, which provided 42 one-hour sessions, or 42 hours of online programming. Small-group classes of no more than six students provided individualized support in Elementary Math and Pre-Algebra. Tutors guided students through collaborative problem-solving, hands-on practice, and targeted instruction designed to strengthen mathematical understanding and build confidence before the new school year.
Throughout the summer, learning extended beyond academics. Students celebrated achievements, formed new friendships, practiced teamwork, and developed confidence in a welcoming and supportive environment where curiosity and effort were encouraged every day.
“I used to get nervous reading out loud, but now I like taking turns because I know I can do it.” — Reading Fluency Student
“My daughter looked forward to every session. She came home excited to tell us about the books she read and the games she played. We noticed she became much more confident reading at home.” — Parent
“The Summer Reading Program with Bay Area Tutoring was a safe place for youth to explore their budding interest and imaginations in stories, allowing them to take that joy for reading with them when they return to the classroom in the Fall.” — Keana A Labra, BATA Tutor
“This summer at the San José Seven Trees Library, I supported three amazing tutors as we worked with students in grades 4–8 during our six‑week literacy program. Together, we helped students feel more comfortable and confident in a library setting by exploring books, practicing literacy skills, and trying out a variety of educational — and hopefully fun — reading activities. We encouraged students to follow their interests, choose books that excited them, and enjoy the library as a welcoming space to learn, grow, and discover new stories.” — LaQisha, BATA Tutor
“My second year with BATA and my second time having a great time seeing the children being engaged. Thank you and to your team for the work that you do.” — San José Public Library Staff Member
“Our small math groups gave every student the opportunity to ask questions, participate, and experience success. By the end of the program, many students were solving problems they had struggled with just a few weeks earlier.” — Online Math Tutor
Programs like these play an important role in helping students prevent summer learning loss while strengthening the literacy, math, and critical thinking skills that support long-term academic success. Just as importantly, they help students build confidence, develop positive relationships with caring adults, and discover that learning can be engaging, interactive, and fun.
BATA is grateful to the San José Public Library Foundation, the San José Public Library, our dedicated tutors, library staff, families, and volunteers whose partnership made another successful summer of learning possible. Together, we helped create welcoming spaces where students could read, explore, ask questions, solve problems, and develop the confidence they will carry into the new school year.
We look forward to continuing our partnership and serving even more Bay Area students in the years ahead.
